The Birth of the Manutara Tour
6 hrs 45 min
Embark on an unforgettable journey through the spiritual and archaeological heart of Rapa Nui. On this full-day tour, we'll visit the most iconic sites where the moai stand, stone guardians who tell the story of a unique people.
Embark on a fascinating journey through time and the spirit of Rapa Nui, where legend comes to life: the birth of the Manutara, the sacred bird that heralded the beginning of the Birdman (Tangata Manu) ritual.
This unique tour will take you to Orongo, the ancient ceremonial center located on the cliffs of Rano Kau volcano, from where tribal chiefs awaited the flight of the Manutara—the tern—every spring. According to ancient tradition, the first warrior to find the bird's egg on the islet of Motu Nui and bring it back became the new Tangata Manu, the spiritual leader of the year.
Discover ancient petroglyphs carved in volcanic rock, listen to stories passed down through generations, and contemplate the immensity of the ocean from the same spot where the ancient Rapa Nui gazed at the skies in search of divine signs. With the guidance of a local expert, you'll connect with the Polynesian worldview, in which nature, ancestors, and the gods speak the same language.
